madonna through the looking glass

I couldn’t have put this any better myself, so I won’t even try. See here for Emily Nussbaum’s excellent solitary discourse on the phenomenon that is Madonna, complete with all the emotional push and pulls of her whole career, that defined more than a generation, and brought a way of life to the world.

For the record, I agree with pretty much everything that Nussbaum has to say here, and the way she serves it up is exquisite. Always an admirer, never a die hard fan, the moment Madonna lost me was seeing her desperately gyrating through the American Life video.  That was an absolute nadir for me - although I’ll always give her the props. She offers to us all so many life lessons, not all of them positive. And, yet, she remains an intriguing study for anyone under 35 to see an superstar total aging (well or no - you decide) before our very eyes.
